Wi-Fi 8 Is Now an Official Standard
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers formally ratified IEEE 802.11bn, the specification that the Wi-Fi Alliance will market as Wi-Fi 8. The ratification follows a three-year development process and a final vote that cleared comfortably among member organizations.
The headline figure is a theoretical maximum throughput of 100 Gbps on the 6 GHz and 60 GHz bands combined, achieved through Multi-Link Operation (MLO) enhancements, 4096-QAM modulation, and a significantly wider channel bonding capability. In practice, enterprise deployments are expected to sustain 30–50 Gbps in dense environments.
Latency Improvements for Real-Time Applications
Beyond raw throughput, Wi-Fi 8 introduces Extremely High Reliability (EHR) mode, targeting sub-1-millisecond air-interface latency. This directly addresses use cases including industrial automation, augmented-reality headsets, and robotic teleoperation over local wireless links — applications where Wi-Fi 6E's 5–10 ms latency was a barrier.
The standard also specifies coordinated spatial reuse across access points, allowing dense office deployments to eliminate the channel-collision problems that have plagued high-density Wi-Fi installs.
Timeline to Market
First-generation Wi-Fi 8 access points from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Broadcom are expected at CES 2027, with volume availability in H2 2027. Analysts note that Wi-Fi 8 adoption will be gradual, as the full performance gains require both access points and client devices to support the standard simultaneously.
