Tesla confirmed this week that its Optimus Gen 2 humanoid robot fleet at its Fremont, California manufacturing plant has reached 1,000 active units — up from 35 units in January 2026 and surpassing Tesla's own internal Q2 milestone of 750. The fleet is handling parts picking, torque verification, and component inspection tasks across the Model Y and Cybertruck production lines.
Task Complexity Growing
Elon Musk stated at a recent shareholder event that Optimus units in Fremont are completing tasks requiring more precise manipulation than at launch, including inserting wire harness connectors with 0.5mm tolerance requirements. The robots achieve this through in-context learning from human demonstrations captured during regular operations — human workers perform a task once while Optimus observes and then the robot attempts replication.
Production Capacity Plans
Tesla has stated plans to produce 50,000 Optimus units in 2026, with the remainder after the Fremont deployment targeted for external sale beginning in 2027. Initial external pricing has been indicated in the $20,000-$25,000 range, though this has not been formally confirmed.
