SoftBank Launches $30 Billion AI Infrastructure Fund Targeting Southeast Asian Data Centers

SoftBank Bets on Southeast Asia's AI Build-Out

SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son unveiled a $30 billion AI Infrastructure Fund at an event in Singapore this week, the largest dedicated AI infrastructure commitment ever announced for Southeast Asia. The fund will target data center construction, renewable energy infrastructure to power it, and GPU cluster provisioning across Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

The fund structure combines SoftBank balance sheet capital with limited partnership commitments from sovereign wealth funds in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia — both existing SoftBank Vision Fund LPs — and several Japanese institutional investors. SoftBank will act as general partner and primary operator.

Why Southeast Asia, Why Now

Son cited three converging factors: (1) surging enterprise AI adoption in markets where cloud capacity is severely undersupplied relative to demand; (2) governments across the region offering land, power concessions, and tax incentives to attract AI infrastructure investment; and (3) SoftBank's existing equity stakes in regional telecoms and logistics companies, which provide ready off-take for compute capacity.

Indonesia's data sovereignty regulations, which require certain data categories to remain in-country, have particularly driven demand for local AI infrastructure that neither AWS nor Google has fully satisfied at scale.

First Deployments

The fund's first committed project is a 300-MW data center campus in Johor, Malaysia, co-located with a dedicated solar generation facility. Construction starts Q4 2026, with first compute capacity online in mid-2028. SoftBank said it is in advanced negotiations with an undisclosed hyperscale anchor tenant for 60% of the campus capacity.
