AI Creates Merchant Revenue Lift
Shopify reported second quarter 2026 earnings this week, including data showing that merchants actively using Shopify AI tools — including Sidekick (AI business advisor), AI-generated product descriptions, AI email marketing, and AI-powered storefront personalization — generated 23% more gross merchandise volume per active store than control-group merchants with comparable catalogs.
Tool Adoption Rates
AI tool adoption among active Shopify merchants has reached 67%, up from 31% a year ago. The fastest-growing tool is Sidekick, Shopify's AI business advisor that answers operational questions, writes marketing copy, and provides data-driven recommendations. Sidekick had 2.1 million weekly active merchant users in Q2 2026.
Shopify's Overall Performance
Shopify reported Q2 2026 revenue of $2.49 billion, up 22% year-over-year. Gross merchandise volume was $66 billion, up 19%. The company turned its first full quarter of GAAP profitability in Q2 2025 and has maintained profitability since, with Q2 2026 net income of $288 million.
Competitive Context
BigCommerce, Wix, and Squarespace have all launched competing AI tools. Shopify's lead comes from its merchant data advantage — having processed hundreds of billions of dollars of transactions, Shopify's recommendation models are trained on commercial patterns competitors cannot access.
The Commerce Intelligence Layer
Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke has described the company's AI strategy as building a "commerce intelligence layer" that sits above the transaction platform. Merchants using multiple Shopify AI tools show compounding benefits, as each tool feeds data back to improve the others.
