A paper label tells you a product's name and, if you are lucky, a country of origin and a short list of materials. A digital product passport aims to tell you everything else: what a thing is actually made of down to the components, where those components came from, how the item can be repaired, what is inside it that is hazardous, and how it should be recycled at the end of its life. The idea, now moving from proposal into rule across several categories of goods, is to attach a scannable digital record to a physical object so that anyone along the chain — a regulator, a repairer, a recycler, a buyer — can read its history rather than guess at it.
The motivation is that modern supply chains are opaque by default, and that opacity has costs. It hides where materials were really sourced, makes it hard to prove a sustainability or safety claim, frustrates repair because nobody knows what is inside, and turns recycling into guesswork because the composition is unknown. A passport that travels with the product is meant to replace trust-me claims with checkable records: the recycled content is what the passport says because the passport is auditable, the battery can be serviced because its make-up is documented, the item can be sorted correctly at end of life because its materials are declared. Done well, it makes a product's real story legible for the first time.
The work this creates lands squarely on the businesses that make, import and sell goods, and it is not trivial. A passport is only as good as the data behind it, which means a manufacturer has to actually know — and be able to prove — what its suppliers put into a product, several tiers deep, where much of that information has historically been vague or simply unavailable. Assembling it requires suppliers to pass real data up the chain, systems to hold it, and a way to keep it current as designs change. For a company used to a one-line materials declaration, producing a component-level, verifiable record is a genuine step up in what it must track.
For a smaller business the sensible posture is to treat this as coming rather than hypothetical and to start with the supply chain it already has. That means asking suppliers now for the composition and sourcing data a passport will eventually demand, keeping product records in a structured form rather than scattered across spreadsheets and emails, and treating traceability as a capability to build rather than a form to fill in at the last minute. The transparency a product passport offers is genuinely valuable — it rewards the businesses that can back their claims and exposes the ones that cannot — but the value is earned by knowing your own product deeply enough to describe it honestly, which is harder, and more useful, than it sounds.
