Every so often a demonstration of a home robot goes around and looks like the future has arrived: a machine that folds laundry, loads a dishwasher, tidies a cluttered room, fetches a drink. The footage is genuinely impressive and the underlying progress is real. But the gap between that demonstration and a robot you could actually buy and rely on in your own home is enormous, and understanding why is more useful than being dazzled by the clip — because that gap is not marketing exaggeration so much as the hardest part of the entire problem.

This is why the robots that have genuinely succeeded in the home are the ones that radically narrowed the problem. The robot vacuum works because it does one bounded task on the floor, in a way that tolerates mistakes and does not need to grasp or recognise much of anything. It is not a general-purpose helper; it is a single-purpose appliance, and that is exactly why it works. The pattern holds across robotics generally: success comes from constraining the task until it is tractable, not from building a machine that does everything a little unreliably. A general home robot that does many things is a far harder proposition than a specialised device that does one, and reliability, not capability, is what determines whether people keep using it.
For anyone tempted by the promise, the sensible reading is to enjoy the demonstrations as a preview of a long road rather than a product announcement, and to judge any actual home robot by how reliably it does something specific rather than how impressively it does something general in a video. The genuinely useful home robots of the near future are likely to keep looking like appliances with a narrow job rather than humanoid helpers doing the chores, because that is where the technology actually works. The all-purpose robot butler is not a fraud; it is just consistently much further away than the best clip makes it look, and the distance is the engineering, not the hype.
