Scale Deployment Arrives
BYD confirmed this week that 500 humanoid robots are actively operating across three of its electric vehicle manufacturing facilities in China. The robots handle battery module assembly, wiring harness installation, and quality inspection tasks — work requiring the dexterity and visual judgment that has historically required human hands.
Technology Partnerships
BYD worked with Unitree Robotics and a second undisclosed partner for the deployment. The robots use Unitree's G1 platform with BYD-specific customization: proprietary end-effectors designed for BYD's Blade battery module geometry, integration with BYD's factory management system, and custom safety zones compatible with human worker co-presence.
Operational Performance
BYD reports the deployed robots operate at approximately 70% of trained human worker speed on their assigned tasks but with significantly lower quality variation — consistent torque application, consistent spatial positioning, and no performance degradation over an 8-hour shift. The 70% speed figure is expected to improve toward 90% of human baseline within 6 months as the robots accumulate operational experience and fine-tune task models.
Scale Roadmap
BYD has announced plans to expand to 5,000 humanoid units by end of 2027 across all manufacturing facilities. At that scale, BYD would lead all global companies in deployed humanoid robots — ahead of Tesla's Optimus commitments and significantly ahead of any Western automotive manufacturer.
The Economics
China's dual pressures of rising manufacturing labor costs and demographic decline in working-age population create a structural incentive for robotics investment that exceeds near-term ROI calculations. Government industrial subsidies further improve the investment case.
