Boston Dynamics Atlas Electric Secures First Commercial Contracts Outside Hyundai

## Atlas Goes Commercial Boston Dynamics announced this week that it has signed commercial contracts for Atlas electric humanoid robots with two manufacturers outside parent company Hyundai: a US-based automotive component supplier (unnamed at the customer's request) and a European logistics company. The contracts mark the formal transition of Atlas from an internal/partner deployment to a commercial product available to third parties. ## Atlas Electric Capabilities The current Atlas electric (which replaced the hydraulic Atlas in 2024) stands approximately 1.5 meters tall, weighs 76 kilograms, and can manipulate objects up to 11 kilograms. Its control system, using a combination of reinforcement learning and model predictive control, enables dynamic balance recovery and adaptation to uneven surfaces not programmed in advance. ## What the Contracts Cover Boston Dynamics has not disclosed financial terms. The automotive component supplier is deploying 8 Atlas units for materials handling in a stamping facility. The European logistics company is deploying 15 units for sortation tasks. Both contracts include multi-year service agreements and software update provisions. ## Pricing Signals Boston Dynamics has indicated Atlas will be offered as "robotics-as-a-service" rather than a one-time purchase, with pricing expected in the range of $150,000-$200,000 annually per unit including service and software. This positions Atlas at the premium end of the humanoid robot market, targeting high-value manufacturing rather than labor-cost arbitrage. ## Competition Boston Dynamics faces growing competition from Agility Robotics (Amazon-owned), Figure AI (Microsoft-backed), Physical Intelligence, and Chinese entrants. The market is moving rapidly from research to commercial at an accelerating pace.
