Apple Acquires RealAI to Accelerate On-Device Agent Runtime for iPhone 18 and M5 Macs

By Defici Editorial · 27 Jul 2026

Who RealAI Is

RealAI was founded in 2023 by former Apple and Google engineers focused on efficient on-device orchestration of multi-step AI tasks -- specifically, running complex agentic workflows on mobile hardware without cloud round-trips. The company's key patent portfolio covers memory-efficient task graph execution on NPU hardware and low-power background inference scheduling.

The startup had raised $120 million across two rounds but declined subsequent term sheets, reportedly to remain acquisition-eligible without the valuation expectations larger funding rounds would have imposed.

What Apple Gains

Apple's current Apple Intelligence implementation handles one-shot requests well but struggles with tasks that require maintaining state across multiple steps -- booking a restaurant that fits dietary preferences mentioned three conversations ago, or monitoring a classifieds search and alerting the user when a matching item appears.

RealAI's runtime is designed precisely for these persistent, stateful, multi-step patterns. Integrated into the A19 and M5 chip families, it would enable Siri to operate as a genuine background agent rather than a reactive assistant -- checking, tracking, comparing, and notifying without user prompting.

Timeline and Product Impact

Apple has not confirmed the acquisition, but regulatory filings in the EU and UK name RealAI as an Apple subsidiary as of 18 July 2026. Industry analysts expect the technology to surface in Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2027, with hardware enablement in iPhone 18 Pro and M5 MacBook Pro.
