Apple Intelligence Expands to 15 New Languages in iOS 18.5 Update

By Defici Editorial · 21 Jul 2026

Language Expansion Broadens Reach

Apple released iOS 18.5 this week, expanding Apple Intelligence AI features to 15 additional languages: Polish, Turkish, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malay, and Filipino. The update brings the total number of supported languages to 27 and expands the addressable base for Apple Intelligence features to an estimated additional 400 million iOS users.

Features Now Available

The newly supported languages gain access to Writing Tools (text rewriting, proofreading, and summarization), Smart Reply suggestions in Mail and Messages, Priority Notifications (AI-ranked notification summary), and Photo Clean Up. Image generation features from the original Apple Intelligence launch remain English-first pending additional safety and localization review in each new language.

On-Device Processing

Apple continues to emphasize that the majority of Apple Intelligence processing occurs on-device using the Apple Neural Engine in A17 Pro and M-series chips. Requests that require server processing are routed through Private Cloud Compute, Apple's privacy-preserving server infrastructure that does not store request data.

Competitive Timing

The language expansion comes as Google's Android AI features and Samsung's Galaxy AI have both supported most of these languages for several months. Apple is catching up on the language front while maintaining its lead on privacy architecture and on-device processing breadth.

Developer Implications

Third-party developers using the Writing Tools and Siri Intelligence APIs gain access to the new languages automatically without code changes, provided their apps support the user's device language.
