Apple's A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometre manufacturing process, has set a new single-core record on the Geekbench benchmark, reportedly beating high-end desktop chips from Intel and AMD by a double-digit margin on that measure. "Single-core" speed is what most everyday tasks depend on, because they run one step at a time rather than spreading across many cores.
A smaller manufacturing process packs transistors more tightly, which usually means more speed for less power and less heat.
What it means: the phone in your pocket is now faster at ordinary tasks than many desktop computers were a year ago. For a small business, that is a reminder that a modern phone or tablet can handle point-of-sale, invoicing and light editing without a separate computer.
