Anthropic published its 2026 State of AI Agents report, charting how businesses have moved from experimenting with AI agents to running them in day-to-day operations. An AI "agent" is software that can carry out multi-step tasks on its own, such as reading a request, looking something up and drafting a response, rather than just answering a single question.
Reports like this consistently find a wide gap between the many firms trying agents and the far smaller number that have put them into reliable production use.
What it means: the honest lesson from the field is that getting an agent to work in a demo is easy and getting it to work reliably every day is hard. A small business is better off automating one narrow, well-understood task completely than launching a broad "AI assistant" that half-works across everything.
