Amazon Business has completed the first phase of its autonomous procurement initiative, deploying AI agents that handle end-to-end purchase order generation, supplier negotiation prompts, delivery scheduling, and invoice reconciliation across 40 of its largest non-inventory supplier relationships.
The agents operate within predefined spend limits and supplier-specific rule sets. When a requisition arrives, the agent identifies the best-qualified supplier from an approved panel, retrieves current pricing via the supplier's API or web portal, generates a compliant PO document, submits it, and schedules a follow-up confirmation -- all without human initiation.
Results After 90-Day Pilot
Across the 90-day pilot, median PO cycle time dropped from 11.3 days to 3.2 days. Invoice exceptions fell by 61%, as the agent captures price confirmations in structured form before order submission rather than relying on later reconciliation.
Staff previously assigned to manual PO entry have been redeployed to exception handling and supplier relationship management, where human judgment adds more value.
Implications for Marketplace Sellers
Amazon plans to extend agent-driven procurement to its third-party marketplace seller network in 2027, allowing sellers to configure agents that automatically reorder stock from approved distributors when inventory drops below threshold -- a capability that blurs the line between marketplace participant and autonomous commercial actor.
